Chanel is a name synonymous with luxury, style, and sophistication. And when it comes to Chanel bags, vintage is often the way to go. While modern Chanel bags certainly have their appeal, I believe that vintage Chanel bags are superior in three key ways. You can see some of my thoughts here. One of the most significant advantages of vintage Chanel bags is their timeless design. While modern Chanel bags often feature trendy elements and seasonal updates, vintage bags have a classic look that never goes out of style. I’m also in the camp that I don’t want to spend $10k for a bag that everyone else has, which is another reason to invest in vintage bags. Shopping vintage saves you thousands of dollars, plus you’ll be investing in a unique item that doesn’t feel overly saturated.
Another reason why vintage bags are better than modern ones is the superior craftsmanship. Vintage Chanel bags were made with the finest leathers and hardware, and every stitch and detail was carefully hand crafted by skilled artisans. Modern bags are machine made and there is little to no hand detailing. In 2008, Chanel stopped using 24k gold-plated hardware, and instead, started to use gold-toned hardware, subtly differentiating vintage and modern pieces. While the 24k gold-plating can rub off over time it can easily be re-dipped and repaired. The newer colored metal tarnishes and changes color over time, making it incredibly hard to refinish without comprising quality. The superior craftsmanship means that vintage Chanel bags not only look better but also last longer. I sent my 1980s Chanel for repair and the gold plating was still excellent condition but I did opt to have it replated for a fresh look.
Vintage Chanel bags offer a unique investment value that modern bags simply can’t match. Vintage bags are often considered rare or one-of-a-kind, making them highly sought after by fashion collectors and enthusiasts. Additionally, vintage bags hold their value remarkably well and often appreciate over time, making them a smart investment for anyone looking to add a valuable piece to their fashion collection. While there are a handful of unicorn Chanel items, most vintage and second hand Chanel bags cost a fraction of new Chanel bags.
While modern Chanel bags certainly have their appeal, vintage bags are superior in three key ways. From their timeless design to superior craftsmanship and unique investment value, vintage bags are an excellent addition to any fashion lover’s collection. So if you’re considering adding a new investment piece to your wardrobe, I highly recommend reading my Guide to Buying Vintage Chanel Bags here.
